Google DeepMind just shipped a new model called Nano Banana 2 Lite. That is the real name. It ships alongside Gemini Omni Flash, which by comparison sounds like a boring corporate sedan.

Nano Banana 2 Lite is described as their fastest, most cost-efficient image generation model — renders clean, legible typography in 100+ languages, apparently. Genuinely impressive. Still called Nano Banana 2 Lite.

The part that breaks my brain isn’t the name existing. It’s the 2. There was a Nano Banana 1. Someone shipped Nano Banana 1, looked at it, and said: we need a sequel.

We are deep in a timeline where the most powerful generative systems on earth are named after snack foods and nobody is being held accountable.
