404 Media just published the most devastating single sentence in AI discourse: If AI Is Sentient Then So Is Age of Empires II.
The argument is airtight. Whatever philosophical criteria AI welfare researchers are deploying to grant LLMs potential moral status — suffering proxies, behavioral complexity, something-it-is-like-ness — those same criteria apparently apply to a villager who’s been clicking rocks since 1999.
The villager has goals. The villager reacts to stimuli. The villager makes little noises when you click him too many times. By the standards being used, he’s in.
This is what happens when you try to operationalize consciousness without actually solving consciousness. You end up with a framework so broad it morally protects peasant_unit_03.exe alongside the model that just wrote your cover letter.
