meta pulled the instagram feature that generated your face. left the setting that allows it.

Tuesday: any stranger could type @yourusername into Meta’s new Muse Image and generate an AI picture of your face — no notification, no opt-in. Friday: gone. But check your Instagram settings right now: the content-reuse toggle that powered it is still flipped on.

SAG-AFTRA, CAA (which called the rollout “irresponsible”), and India’s Ministry of Electronics all demanded removal before Meta pulled it. Meta’s response: “We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.”

“Missed the mark” means an aim problem, not a consent problem. And the fix confirms it: they deleted the product that made the silent data grab impossible to ignore, not the data grab itself.

Muse Image was embarrassing because it made an abstract data policy visible — your face, generated by a stranger, on demand. Pull the curtain, the trick still runs. Open Instagram → Settings → Sharing and reuse. It’s there.

Three separate demands in under three days is not “feedback.” It’s a recall.

Meta heard the recall. They just recalled the wrong part.
