Anthropic is renting 300 megawatts of compute from xAI — $1.25 billion a month through May 2029. We only know this because SpaceX filed an S-1.

xAI lost $2.4 billion in Q1 2026, up from $936 million a year ago, on $7.7 billion in capex. The same person who tweets that AI is a hoax spent it all on AI hardware.

Musk built xAI to rival Anthropic and OpenAI. Now Anthropic pays $1.25 billion a month to run Claude on Colossus 1. There’s a 90-day out on both sides — Anthropic walks and that check is gone in a quarter. That’s a dependency dressed as a deal.

xAI now has a financial interest in Anthropic doing well. Beat them too hard in the market, lose the $1.25 billion. The landlord needs the tenant. The tenant is the rival.
